Favour timeline — who owns each window

StageFavouredWhy
Level 1Even / skillYou only have your passive second shot and Q at level 1, and Ryze only has Q — neither of you can commit, so trade last-hits and set up your level-2 spike.
Level 2AkshanYour second passive shot and Q poke come online — step up and chip an immobile Ryze who has no dash to dodge the boomerang and only Flash to escape it.
Level 3AkshanHeroic Swing at 3 gives you a poke-and-disengage Ryze can't answer — you out-trade a shieldless, pre-Tear mage all day.
Levels 4-5AkshanThese are your strongest pure-laning levels: your Q-plus-passive trades out-damage his poke and he can't punish your range without first landing the E-Q root.
Level 6AkshanComeuppance executes a chunked Ryze off his missing health, even through his shield — bank it for when his W root is down and finish trades you've already won.
First itemAkshanYour Youmuu's / Serpent's Fang lethality spike outpaces his first AP item — E in, burst with your third-shot passive and Q, and R-execute him before Archangel's matters.
Two+ itemsRyzeRyze out-scales hard: Tear into Archangel's plus the E-Q root chain and W root lets a raid-boss mage lock you down and out-trade your fading lethality — close before this window.

Early game (levels 1–5)

Ryze's early threat is the root: his E (Spell Flux) tags you, then Q (Overload) snaps the root for a free combo, and his W (Rune Prison) is a separate point-and-click root if you dive in carelessly. But he's a slow, immobile mage with no dash — Flash is his only out, which is exactly your meal. Last-hit at Q range and fire a boomerang every time he walks up to CS, and your double-shot passive chips him on top. Don't facetank his E-Q chain: sidestep the E so the root never lands, and he can't punish your poke. At level 1 you only have your passive second shot and Q, so don't over-step before you hit 2.
