At level 1 you only have Q and must walk to melee range to trade — Akali's Five Point Strike poke is short-range too, so neither of you can bully the other cleanly, but she wins any exchange you let go long because her Passive mark stacks mean free poke. Shove the first wave quickly so Akali cannot freely walk up and stack marks; use Q at max range to harass her on last-hit attempts without committing to melee range. At level 2 your W root gives you the first real threat: if she steps up aggressively, W-root into empowered Q lands real damage and backs her off.
