How to win lane as Ryze against Mel · 57.95% win rate (195 Emerald+ games, lolalytics, sampled July 2026) · Matchup data reviewed on patch 26.15
Trade rotations, not autos — your EQ out-damages her poke if you land Flux chains.
Track: Mel's W — Rebuttal (38–26s cooldown). Reflects your projectiles back — never poke while it glows.
Read from Ryze's seat: which stage windows this plan plays for against Mel.
This is Ryze's own plan; across 195 pooled games the lane is Ryze-favoured.
| Stage | Favoured | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Even / skill | Mel has ranged Q poke and you have only Q with no gap-close — neither side can reliably force a kill, but she wins every step-up trade while Rebuttal is untested. |
| Level 2 | Mel | W root and empowered Q are online but Rebuttal reflects direct projectiles — she punishes every greedy rotation and extends her level advantage freely. |
| Level 3 | Mel | Spell Flux loop is online but Rebuttal still covers your combo; she controls spacing and wins any fight where you commit into the reflect. |
| Levels 4-5 | Mel | Pre-item mana costs are high and Rebuttal cooldown is short — she covers nearly every rotation attempt and your Phase Rush kite cannot outrun her ranged poke. |
| Level 6 | Mel | Realm Warp adds map pressure but grants no 1v1 combat spike — Mel still wins the straight duel when Rebuttal is available and you have no items yet. |
| First item | Mel | Rebuttal cannot cover a full Seraph's Ryze rotation — your cooldowns are now near-zero and the Flux cascade out-damages anything she can output safely at range. |
| Two+ items | Ryze | Two-item Ryze out-rotates, out-DPS, and out-scales Mel in every extended fight; EQ spam through the wave and Warp to fights she cannot reflect her way out of. |
At level 1 you have Q and nothing else — Mel's ranged Q poke will hit you for free because you must walk to melee range to last-hit while she farms from distance. Do not throw Q at her; she will either sidestep it or bank the poke trade handily. Farm with Q range on the wave, take the Manaflow Band stacks passively, and accept that you will lose a few HP bars before level 3. At level 2 your W root exists but committing it into a healthy Mel before you have Flux loaded is a way to waste your only anti-dive insurance. At level 3 your full loop is online — E the minion standing next to her to bounce Flux onto her without throwing a direct projectile into Rebuttal, then W-root and double Q. This is your only safe aggression pattern; every other approach walks a projectile into her reflect.
