How to win lane as Ryze against Mordekaiser · 51.69% win rate over 267 Emerald+ games · Updated 2026-07-27
| Stage | Favoured | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Even / skill | Neither kit lands its full pattern at level 1 — Mordekaiser has only Q and passive shield, Ryze has only Q; the manaflow vs healing arms race starts now but decides nothing. |
| Level 2 | Mordekaiser | Mordekaiser gains E pull and W shield at level 2, dragging Ryze into trades where W healing erases the poke damage before Ryze has W root to keep distance. |
| Level 3 | Mordekaiser | Full Mordekaiser kit with E-Q-W cycling edges a Ryze whose Flux chains require stationary nearby minions — he out-sustains the damage and threatens a first kill. |
| Levels 4-5 | Mordekaiser | Realm of Death is two levels away and Mordekaiser's sustained healing through W passive makes mid-trade attrition go his direction; Ryze must Phase Rush out of every extended exchange. |
| Level 6 | Mordekaiser | Realm of Death is now live, stripping Ryze of Flux-minion chains and Phase Rush exit inside the isolated 1v1 — the laning phase belongs to Mordekaiser as long as R is available. |
| First item | Mordekaiser | Mordekaiser has no meaningful item power spike that changes the matchup, but Realm of Death still governs every lane step; Ryze has not yet hit Seraph's — the lane stays Mordekaiser-favoured. |
| Two+ items | Ryze | Seraph's Embrace brings near-permanent combo uptime and damage that outlasts W healing; Mordekaiser's immobility is finally a liability Ryze can exploit in the side lane between Realm of Death cooldowns. |
At level 1 you only have Q and must walk to melee range to use it — Mordekaiser's W passive already absorbs the poke and his Q isolation bonus punishes any moment you are separated from minions. Farm with Q at max range and accept that neither of you wins this exchange cleanly; it is genuinely even because his kit also needs level 3 to threaten a kill. At level 2 he gains his E pull and the full W shield, meaning every step forward without W root ready risks a dragged-in trade he wins on healing alone. At level 3 his combo is complete and yours is not punishing enough yet — he can E-pull, Q for the isolation bonus, and heal back damage through W while your Flux cascade needs him to stand still near minions to work. Play the wave, not the man: keep minions between you and his E, use W root to prevent the pull rather than to trade, and save empowered Q for the moment he overextends, not as a damage rotation opener.
