How to win lane as Ryze against Dr. Mundo · 43.49% win rate over 292 Emerald+ games · Updated 2026-07-27
| Stage | Favoured | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Dr. Mundo | Infected Bonesaw (Q) hits for ~20% of your current HP from range — Ryze has no sustain at level 1 to offset two or three consecutive hits, and his only answer (Q poke) deals flat damage Mundo passive-regens immediately. |
| Level 2 | Dr. Mundo | W root is your first real threat, but landing it requires walking into Heart Zapper (E) range where his auto-proc fires — the trade math is negative because his percent-HP Q already has you below 70% HP. |
| Level 3 | Dr. Mundo | Full Flux loop (E-Q-W) online but his passive regeneration outpaces your poke rate; Mundo controls the lane by standing at Cleaver range and forcing you to choose between CSing and eating percent-HP damage. |
| Levels 4-5 | Even / skill | Both champions are farming; Ryze avoids Cleavers and banks mana toward Seraph's while Mundo stacks HP — neither can solo-kill the other cleanly, making this a genuine skill expression window for spacing. |
| Level 6 | Even / skill | Realm Warp opens roam pressure but grants no combat steroid, and Maximum Dosage is now active on Mundo — attempting a level-6 all-in risks him R-healing through your entire combo and running you down with the movement speed bonus. |
| First item | Dr. Mundo | Seraph's Embrace completes your loop speed, but Mundo's passive plus percent-HP scaling off your new max mana means each Cleaver hurts more than it did early — you trade slightly better but he heals it back without R; lane is still his. |
| Two+ items | Ryze | Two items worth of Flux cascade burst finally outraces his regeneration before R can save him — this is Ryze's genuine power window, and Realm Warp into a teamfight AoE cascade is the win condition that made surviving lane worthwhile. |
Dr. Mundo's Infected Bonesaw (Q) is a percent-current-HP missile you must play around from level 1 — it hits for roughly 20% of your current HP each cast and he throws it every four seconds, so letting him land three in a row through the wave puts you in kill range before you even have W. Stand behind a minion cluster when he winds up; his Q travels in a straight line and a single creep body blocks it. Your only level 1 trade is Q from max range, and even that is a wash — he heals the damage back through his passive rupture regeneration. At level 2, W root gives you a threat, but spending it forces you melee-close where Heart Zapper (E) bonus damage fires automatically on his next auto — you will trade poorly. At level 3 your Flux bounce loop is online, but Mundo shrugs poke with his passive: you need three or four full E-Q-W rotations to move his bar, and he will land two Cleavers on you in that time. Accept this: early lane is his. Farm, sidestep Cleavers, and do not burn Flash trying to prove a point.
