Sylas is one of the few melee enemies who can actually duel you early without being a pure lane bully — his E (Abscond/Abduct) dashes him onto you, his Q zone chunks you, and his W (Kingslayer) drain-heal tops him back up while your Divine Ascent is still stacking and your autos are short-range. At levels 1-3 you have no dash and only Q to poke, so don't walk up to contest CS inside his E range — eat a little damage and farm with the tip of Q. The good news: he has to spend his E to reach you, and once it's down he has no second gap-close, so respect the engage rather than the (non-existent) hard stun and just don't get caught flat-footed.
