How to win lane as Jax against Maokai · 52.26% win rate (486 Emerald+ games, lolalytics, sampled July 2026) · Matchup data reviewed on patch 26.15
Dodge his W root — E his combo, out-scale him.
Track: Maokai's W — Twisted Advance (14–10s cooldown). His lock-on root. Dodge it.
Read from Jax's seat: which stage windows this plan plays for against Maokai.
| Stage | Favoured | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Maokai | With only Leap Strike and no Counter Strike, his Sapling Toss and Bramble Smash out-chunk you and Sap Magic heals the rest — farm and take the poke. |
| Level 2 | Even / skill | You take Empower for the Leap-Strike-into-empowered-auto burst, but his Sap Magic sustain and sapling chip keep the early trade even. |
| Level 3 | Jax | Your full combo lands: bait Twisted Advance, dodge the rooted-follow-up auto with Counter Strike, then recast the stun to win the trade. |
| Levels 4-5 | Jax | He has one dash and short-range Bramble Smash can't kite your Leap Strike, so your ranked-up combo owns every extended trade. |
| Level 6 | Jax | Grandmaster-at-Arms' Armor/MR active eats his Bramble Smash, and the on-hit ramp out-damages his Sap Magic healing — prime all-in window. |
| First item | Even / skill | Your Trinity/on-hit spike still beats a half-built Maokai, but his first tank items start blunting the burst and his sustain holds — keep forcing it before he completes. |
| Two+ items | Maokai | Full-tank Maokai declines the duel, Twisted-Advance roots to disengage, and scales into a Nature's Grasp peel role you can't punish. |
Level 1 belongs to Maokai: with only Leap Strike and no Counter Strike yet, his Sapling Toss zones the wave and a Bramble Smash knockback chunks you for free, and his Sap Magic passive heals back whatever you poke. Eat the wave and last-hit safe. Remember Counter Strike only dodges basic attacks — it does NOT blank his Bramble Smash knockback, his sapling explosion, or his Twisted Advance root, so don't expect it to neutralize him the way it does an auto-attacker. The lane flips your way at 3: once Leap Strike + Empower + Counter Strike are all up, you bait his Twisted Advance, hold Counter Strike through the auto he throws while you're rooted so it dodges, then recast to stun and land the empowered trade before he can react.
