How to win lane as Sylas against Garen · 47.38% win rate (5,768 Emerald+ games, lolalytics, sampled July 2026) · Matchup data reviewed on patch 26.15
Long-fight specialist vs long-fight specialist — your W heal and a stolen R win it if you dodge Courage.
Track: Garen's W — Courage (22–12s cooldown). Damage reduction on cast — your burst only lands full once it is down.
Read from Sylas's seat: which stage windows this plan plays for against Garen.
| Stage | Favoured | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Garen | Garen's Q silence is your hardest counter at level 1 — it stops W mid-channel and there is no kit answer; last-hit at Q chain range and concede the wave tempo. |
| Level 2 | Garen | His Q still cancels E2 on cast; only trade into a Garen who already burned Q on a minion or is sitting at the end of its cooldown. |
| Level 3 | Garen | Full kit access helps but Courage (W) eats the burst window — commit only after baiting the W activation, then E2-Q-W in the gap. |
| Levels 4-5 | Garen | Levels 4-5 are Courage-gated: his damage reduction and passive regen outlast short trades; freeze or slow-push to force a gank rather than duel. |
| Level 6 | Sylas | Hijack takes Demacian Justice and a real execute, but his own R is back on 120s and Courage's 22-second shield plus his passive regen still win the straight duel. |
| First item | Even / skill | Riftmaker omnivamp plus W heal makes extended trades survivable once Courage expires, but you still lose short all-ins where he Qs first. |
| Two+ items | Garen | Stacked Courage and regen dominate the late duel; stop trying to 1v1 and use E-chain flanks to enable your team instead. |
Level 1 is a concession — Garen's Q silence will interrupt your W mid-channel if you try to force a trade, and without E you have no reliable engage. Farm at Q splash range and do not walk into auto range; he will Q-silence you and spin freely with no cooldowns spent. At level 2 your E comes online but remain cautious: if he Qs the moment you fire E2, the silence cancels the chain and you eat his empowered auto and spin for free. The only safe trade at levels 1-3 is to bait his Q onto a minion or wait for it to expire on cooldown, then E1 dash to absorb poke on the shield and E2 chain into W. Do not extend the trade beyond the W heal window — Garen's passive regen and Courage reset his durability faster than you expect.
