How to win lane as Sylas against Illaoi · 44.44% win rate over 234 Emerald+ games · Updated 2026-07-27
| Stage | Favoured | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Illaoi | Illaoi's Test of Spirit (E) is live at level 1 — a successful pull attaches a spirit that takes bonus tentacle damage and forces you to either fight in her field or abandon the wave; there is no safe trade answer at this level. |
| Level 2 | Illaoi | Tentacle Smash (W) is now online alongside E — a pulled spirit under two tentacle hits removes more HP than your W can recover, and your E dash is your only escape tool, not an engagement tool yet. |
| Level 3 | Illaoi | Full kit access still does not beat her field: your E2 stun is your best trade opener but she can proc a tentacle slam during your own combo animation, and Illaoi's passive sustain from tentacle hits begins to show even in short trades. |
| Levels 4-5 | Illaoi | Her tentacles accumulate around the CS zone with every passing minute — Levels 4-5 Illaoi with two to three tentacles active wins almost every melee exchange because the passive procs pad every trade in her favor beyond what your W corrects. |
| Level 6 | Even / skill | Stealing Leap of Faith is your closest thing to an even moment — a copied R in a clean duel when she has no tentacles pre-placed can swing the all-in — but her passive tentacles and E field mean she retains structural lane dominance even without her R up. |
| First item | Illaoi | Iceborn Gauntlet or Heartsteel gives Illaoi both extra bulk and a slow on her empowered auto, which pins you inside the tentacle field long enough for multiple passive slams to fire — your Riftmaker spike does not close this gap. |
| Two+ items | Illaoi | Two-item Illaoi's Cruel Tide healing during Leap of Faith surpasses your W burst heal in any fight lasting more than three seconds; your correct late role is holding her stolen R for a side skirmish, not fighting her directly. |
Level 1 is a pure survival exercise — Illaoi's Test of Spirit (E) is active immediately and one successful pull turns the lane into her tentacle field while your spirit takes 15% bonus damage. Stay at max Q range, land Chain Lash for CS, and do not step into her E cast range to trade. At level 2 she gains Tentacle Smash (W) which means she can proc a tentacle slam on top of a pulled spirit — still do not commit. Your only real window before level 3 is the fifteen seconds after her E misses: if you see it sail past you, immediately dash in with E and burn your W for a burst trade, then back out before tentacles re-stack. Missing that window and standing still is what loses this lane in the first five minutes.
