Favour timeline — who owns each window

StageFavouredWhy
Level 1Even / skillMini-Gnar can Boomerang you from outside Poison Trail and hop any Mega Adhesive you throw — you have no level-1 answer to ranged poke, so concede and set the wave.
Level 2GnarHyper (W) passive stacks let him burst you in fast hop-in trades before you have Mega Adhesive to root and punish the approach — he controls the tempo in mini form.
Level 3Even / skillMega Adhesive is online and you can finally threaten a root-into-Fling, but his Boomerang range still zones you and he can disengage before you get a full poison cloud on him.
Levels 4-5GnarHe proxies and split-pushes poorly against you, but in mini form he denies your run-at-him pattern with Boomerang poke from range — the lane is still his to dictate.
Level 6SingedInsanity Potion plus ghost lets you run faster than his hop can disengage; for the first time he cannot simply kite you in mini form, and Fling punishes any overextension.
First itemSingedRylai's slow on Poison Trail means every step through your cloud is a commitment — his hop cannot outrun the persistent slow and the Fling-glue-trail chain now fully sticks.
Two+ itemsEven / skillIn the late game he can match your split-push with his own mobility, and a well-timed GNAR! in a teamfight wall-stuns your entire team — the game goes to whoever executes their macro better.

Early game (levels 1–5)

In mini form, Gnar is a ranged kiter who can hop over your Mega Adhesive and poke you with Boomerang from outside Poison Trail range — do not walk at him with your trail on expecting free damage at level 1. Concede the poke and set the wave up near your side. At level 2 he gets his Hyper (W) passive stacking, which lets him burst you in two or three trades if he hops in and out while you have no Mega Adhesive to punish the approach — respect those windows and do not waste your Fling on a hop he will just vault over anyway. Level 3 is slightly better once Mega Adhesive is online, because you can finally threaten a root-into-Fling if he hops in greedily, but he can still disengage safely and his Boomerang continues to zone you off the wave when you try to trail-walk toward him.
