How to win lane as Shen against Nautilus · 53.96% win rate over 4,479 Emerald+ games · Updated 2026-07-27
| Stage | Favoured | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Even / skill | Level 1 Nautilus procs his passive root on the first auto and can freely push the exchange — do not give him two autos before you have Spirit's Refuge available. |
| Level 2 | Nautilus | He now has Q hook: a landed Dredge Line roots you in place for his full passive-auto and E-Riptide chain, and you have no taunt yet to stop it — respect the hook range and stay near terrain. |
| Level 3 | Nautilus | Full kit online for Nautilus means Q into root into E burst is a real kill threat; your kit is not fully online and your W does not block the initial hook CC, so play for wave positioning rather than trading. |
| Levels 4-5 | Shen | With E live you can finally place Spirit's Refuge, land Shadow Dash taunt, and delete his passive autos in the spirit zone — he is immobile and cannot flee the blade shred, so short trades now flip fully in your favour. |
| Level 6 | Shen | Stand United is online and Nautilus has no answer to a global roam channel — press R on every low-HP ally and let him shove into your tower while you win a fight on the other side of the map. |
| First item | Shen | Your first tank item solidifies the trade pattern: his passive roots him in your E-taunt range longer, every auto he throws during the taunt disappears into Spirit's Refuge, and your Ki Barrier shield absorbs the front of his combo before he can finish it. |
| Two+ items | Shen | Two items in, Nautilus is still immobile and still auto-dependent — your W continues to negate his primary damage source, and your global Stand United impact outpaces anything a Nautilus can accomplish from the sidelane. |
Level 1, Nautilus's passive root fires on his first auto and he deals respectable damage before your Spirit's Refuge is even a thought — respect his willingness to auto-trade and do not let him stack two passive procs on you for free. At level 2 he picks up his Q hook and the threat escalates: a landed Dredge Line into passive root into E Riptide sequence is a three-hit punish you cannot interrupt once it starts, and his Q range is deceptively long at the edges of the hitbox. At level 3 his full combo is online and he will look to hook you onto his side of the lane and unload, so hug terrain on the side where his hook arc is shortest. Your own level 3 kit is not online fast enough to contest him cleanly this early — play for CS and shield procs, do not trade even.
