How to win lane as Sejuani against Illaoi · 51.06% win rate over 94 Emerald+ games · Updated 2026-07-27
| Stage | Favoured | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Sejuani | Illaoi's passive tentacles are already on the map at level 1 and Harsh Lesson deals bonus damage through them — identify the wall-side tentacles and farm from the opposite flank so no arm can slap you while you last-hit. |
| Level 2 | Even / skill | Your Q knock-up comes online and you can punish her if she over-chases CS outside her tentacle spread, but her W-into-tentacle combo hits back hard — only trade if she is isolated from her arms. |
| Level 3 | Even / skill | Q-W-E is your full stun chain but her Tentacle Smash animation is short enough that the window is tight — bait her Q or W commit first, then fire your combo rather than initiating into her field blind. |
| Levels 4-5 | Even / skill | Neither of you has a clean edge: her tentacle field is growing and your damage does not scale with levels the way a fighter's does, so farm safely and let your passive resistance build without getting poked out by Harsh Lesson. |
| Level 6 | Sejuani | Glacial Prison is a long-range projectile she cannot sidestep with a dash — hitting R outside her tentacle ring chains into E-stun and gives you a clean kill window before her field can sustain her back. |
| First item | Even / skill | Your Sunfire Aegis or Heartsteel spike meaningfully increases your tankiness and lets you tank a tentacle slam or two while trading, but her item sustain is scaling too — only force first-item all-ins when she is away from her field. |
| Two+ items | Illaoi | With two items Illaoi's tentacle density, Elder God multi-tentacle spawn on her R, and inherent sustain outpace what your CC uptime can overcome in a straight side-lane fight — respect the 1v1, play for teamfight R initiations instead. |
At level 1 you have no Q yet and Illaoi's passive tentacles will start slapping you if you stand still near a wall — identify where her tentacles are before the wave even meets and farm from the side of the lane that has the fewest arms. She cannot dash or close distance, so just walking out of Tentacle Smash (Q) range is your entire gameplan here. Do not let her land a free Harsh Lesson (W) into a tentacle — that combo front-loads a shocking amount of poke damage this early. At level 2 you can threaten a Q knock-up if she steps too far past the wave chasing CS, but back out immediately; a full combo at level 2 from Illaoi before you have E is how you lose the next 10 minutes. At level 3 your Q-W-E chain is online and her animations are punishable — wait for her to commit her W or Q, then fire, but only if you are not already standing inside her tentacle spread.
