How to win lane as Maokai against Swain · 61.29% win rate over 62 Emerald+ games · Updated 2026-07-27
| Stage | Favoured | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Even / skill | Level 1 is even — I have only one ability and no combo, so I just last-hit and refuse to eat his Q poke walking up. |
| Level 2 | Maokai | My W (Twisted Advance) root into Q (Bramble Smash) knockback plus a Sap Magic heal wins the trade before his E-W combo is reliable. |
| Level 3 | Maokai | With W, Q and Sapling Toss all up I repeat rooted trades on his E cooldown and out-sustain his Q poke through my passive. |
| Levels 4-5 | Maokai | My root and poke cooldowns drop while Sap Magic heals me through his chip, so I grind him down with no real drain answer yet. |
| Level 6 | Maokai | Nature's Grasp gives me a long-range root engage that catches him stepping up to E, and I keep trades short so his R can't out-drain me. |
| First item | Maokai | On my Bami/sustain spike I walk through his Q poke and grind him out with W-Q-Sap Magic trades he can't reverse pre-Rylai's. |
| Two+ items | Even / skill | 2+ items is his — full-build Swain with soul stacks and R out-heals my chip in a long AOE fight, so I stop dueling and win on the map. |
Level 1 is a wash — I only have one ability and no combo, so I just last-hit and don't walk into his Q poke for free. The lane turns mine at 2-3: once I have W (Twisted Advance) into Q (Bramble Smash), I root onto him, knock him back, and proc Sap Magic on the next auto to heal the whole trade. The one thing I must dodge is his E (Nevermove) tether — if it lands he pulls me into W bomb and Q for a real chunk, so I bait it or sidestep, then commit my W.
