How to win lane as Maokai against Shen · 53.85% win rate over 104 Emerald+ games · Updated 2026-07-27
| Stage | Favoured | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Even / skill | Two tanks at Level 1 with one ability each — neither has a combo, so it is a farming stalemate until you hit your power spike. |
| Level 2 | Maokai | W into Q gives you a full root-and-swing trade plus a Sap Magic heal before Shen's Q empower and W block come fully online. |
| Level 3 | Maokai | Your root cooldown and Passive sustain let you repeat the W-Q-heal trade, out-grinding a Shen who can only block one swing with W. |
| Levels 4-5 | Maokai | Levels 4-5 are your strongest sustained window — you out-trade with repeated lockdown faster than his Q empower regenerates value. |
| Level 6 | Even / skill | At 6 it evens out: your R is engage not a duel, and his global R lets him swing the map, so neither owns the lane. |
| First item | Maokai | Your first-item durability plus E sapling waveclear lets you crash and roam, and your CC out-pressures his W-block utility around objectives. |
| Two+ items | Even / skill | Late it flattens to a tank mirror neither side solo-kills, so the lane is decided by macro and who lands their R in fights, not the 1v1. |
Two tanks farming, but Levels 2-3 are mine. Once I have W into Q I can root Shen in place, swing Bramble Smash, and proc Sap Magic to heal the trade back — he can't replicate that sustain pre-items. His W is the catch: it shields a chunk of incoming autos and ability damage, so don't waste a fresh Q-empowered Passive auto into it. Throw an E sapling to make him eat tick damage and burn the W defensively, then W-Q when the shield is gone.
