Shred the stat wall — free pressure all lane, just don't let him cash one engage.
Track: Maokai's W — Twisted Advance (14–10s cooldown). Point-and-click root — count its cooldown before stepping up.
Read from Lucian's seat: which stage windows this plan plays for against Maokai.
This is Lucian's own plan; across 208 pooled games the lane is Maokai-favoured.
| Stage | Favoured | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Lucian | Your auto range and Lightslinger first-cast double-tap chip an immobile Maokai for free while his only answer is a W root-dash he has to land first. |
| Level 2 | Lucian | Q plus the Lightslinger double-shot is a brutal burst before his passive sustain can refund it — you own this overstep window against a slow melee. |
| Level 3 | Lucian | With Q-W-E online you poke, kite his saplings, and dash out of his W root-dash — peak lane control over a champion with no way to stick to you. |
| Levels 4-5 | Even / skill | His passive sap-magic sustain comes online and starts paying back your poke, so trades even out even though you still win the short exchange. |
| Level 6 | Even / skill | The Culling is a damage spike but his R wall and W root let a healthy Maokai survive or interrupt it — it's even unless you've already locked him. |
| First item | Even / skill | Your Eclipse/Essence Reaver short-trade burst still matches him, but his sustain refunds the chip — neither of you wins the lane outright here. |
| Two+ items | Maokai | Maokai out-scales you hard: he tanks your double-shots, heals through them, and one W root-dash catches your low-HP body — play safe and group. |
Maokai is exactly the slow, low-range melee I want early — at level 1 my auto range and Lightslinger double-tap let me chip him before he can touch me. The whole danger is his W root-dash: if it lands he pins me and chains Q knockback, and a tank's combo on my low base HP hurts. So I trade with a cast-into-double-shot (Q-Lightslinger or W-Lightslinger autos) and hold E to bail the second I see the W animation. Levels 2-3 are mine cleanly — punish every step he takes to last-hit, because his passive sustain can't refund a full double-shot burst yet.
