Garen's level 1 is his one real window: his Q (Decisive Strike) silences you, so you literally can't cast Riposte for its duration, and the empowered move-speed strike lets him stick and run you down if you over-step. Don't walk up to trade autos into a fresh Garen at level 1 — last-hit at range and wait for your level 2-3 spike. Once you have Q (Lunge) plus E (Bladework), bait his W (Courage) and his Q silence first, then Lunge onto the currently-marked Vital and use the E second-hit guaranteed crit to detonate it for max-HP true damage, chaining low-cooldown Lunges off the proc. His Judgment spin trade can't out-damage a clean Vital detonation.
