How to win lane as Cassiopeia against Illaoi · 49.12% win rate (340 Emerald+ games, lolalytics, sampled July 2026) · Matchup data reviewed on patch 26.15
A DPS check she fails — poison every step-up, ground her approach, and E-spam her off the wave.
Track: Illaoi's E — Test of Spirit (16–12s cooldown). Dodging the spirit pull is the entire matchup.
Read from Cassiopeia's seat: which stage windows this plan plays for against Illaoi.
| Stage | Favoured | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Cassiopeia | She has zero tentacles at level 1 and only E to engage, so your Q (Noxious Blast) pokes her for free while she just farms — and the Q proc lets you walk away clean. |
| Level 2 | Even / skill | She's still slow but her first tentacle and Test of Spirit threat arrive — trade with Q poke only, never stand close enough to eat her E. |
| Level 3 | Illaoi | Her tentacle field is up: throwing Twin Fang inside it means a tentacle slam answers every cast, and a landed Test of Spirit spawns your vessel. |
| Levels 4-5 | Illaoi | Levels 4-5 her ranked Harsh Lesson leaps onto you every 4s and the full tentacle field out-sustains you on her ground — poke only, refuse the bind. |
| Level 6 | Even / skill | Petrifying Gaze flips her Leap of Faith all-in — face her so the cone stuns her before her R tentacles land, or W-ground her off the field for the kill. |
| First item | Cassiopeia | With Malignance up your Q-primed Twin Fang chain out-DPSes her sustain once you fight outside the tentacle ring. |
| Two+ items | Even / skill | You shred an immobile, escape-less target with chained Twin Fang, but her sustain still wins inside the field — it stays a spacing duel you steer, never a coinflip you can't lose. |
Illaoi is glacial at level 1 with no tentacles down and only E (Test of Spirit) as a threat, so I land Q (Noxious Blast) on her every time she steps to last-hit, chipping her for free and grabbing the move-speed burst to stroll out — she can't punish poke she can't reach. The instant her tentacle field is up the lane flips: I do NOT throw Twin Fang while standing in it, because every E I cast eats a tentacle slam back. The one thing I dodge above all is her Test of Spirit — if it lands, she rips my spirit and I'm sprinting away from my own tentacles instead of poking, a free chunk of my HP gone.
