Volibear's only early commit is the Q empowered run — he charges in unstoppable and the run ends in a stun when he reaches you; if that lands while your W is down you eat his W-bite combo. Level 1 is a wash since you're a single-spell mage with no escape and he has no empowered Q yet, but from 2-3 you get Q and E online and the poke war begins: curse him with Q, recast to pull it back for the second hit, and let Spirit Abjuration heal you through whatever chip his bite gets in return. He can't win a poke war at melee range when your passive refunds the trade.
