How to win lane as Ryze against Hwei · 44.65% win rate over 1,814 Emerald+ games · Updated 2026-07-27
| Stage | Favoured | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Hwei | Hwei's QQ and QW outrange your Q Overload, so he pokes you off the wave freely at level 1. |
| Level 2 | Even / skill | With one more spell each it comes down to who dodges, an even skill trade at level 2. |
| Level 3 | Ryze | At three points your W Rune Prison root into a full Flux-Q chain finally lets you punish any Hwei step-up. |
| Levels 4-5 | Hwei | His WW comet and QW slow-zones let him waveclear and poke you under tower safely through 4-5. |
| Level 6 | Hwei | Hwei's EQ spirit-bolt ult is a real combat and zone spike at 6 while your R is only macro. |
| First item | Ryze | Tear and Seraph's mana let your Q chains flow so you begin to out-damage his cooldown-gated poke. |
| Two+ items | Ryze | Fully stacked you outscale Hwei's front-loaded burst as fights extend past his combo. |
Hwei owns the first two levels because his QQ fireball and QW slow-bomb zones outrange your Q Overload and Spell Flux, so he pokes you every time you step to last-hit. You have no range to trade back and your only proc is Flux, which does nothing to a mage sitting behind his minions. Soak XP, hide behind the wave against his QE eye, and give up a little CS rather than eat free poke. Level 2 evens out slightly since it comes down to who dodges, but you are still on the back foot.
