Favour timeline — who owns each window

StageFavouredWhy
Level 1OlafUndertow axe-slow at level 1 lets Olaf walk onto you freely — he has a ranged slow and you have a delayed AoE chain; concede auto range and last-hit at Q distance only.
Level 2OlafVicious Strikes (W) lifesteal activates at level 2 while his axe loop is already online — he sustains through your counter-trade and you have no stun yet to lock him in place.
Level 3OlafHis Reckless Swing (E) true damage ignores your armor and fires every few seconds; at level 3 a full trade goes: axe-slow, true-damage E, auto-W-auto, and your W heal cannot outpace that volume at low AP.
Levels 4-5OlafLevels 4-5 the axe cooldown is your only clock — he controls the engage window and you must react to it, not initiate it; his damage lead is real and not yet offset by Hijack.
Level 6Even / skillRagnarok is an answer to CC-locks, not to burst-trades — when both players press R simultaneously neither stuns the other, so the fight resolves on raw damage and sustain where the margin is slim; call it even.
First itemEven / skillSundered Sky true damage spikes his 1v1 lethality, but your Riftmaker healing is ramping — the fight is coin-flip territory on spent cooldowns; avoid letting him dictate the trade timing with an axe in hand.
Two+ itemsSylasAt 2+ items your W heal and AP burst outscale his true-damage ramp; stolen Ragnarok means his all-in no longer shuts off your E2 hook, and the extended brawl finally resolves in your favour.

Early game (levels 1–5)

At level 1 Olaf simply throws his axe (Undertow) and walks onto you — his slow lasts long enough that your only level-1 tool, Q, cannot re-establish range. Stand behind minions so the axe hits creeps first, and do not step up to contest his CS unless the axe is visibly on the ground waiting for his pickup. At level 2 his Vicious Strikes (W) activates lifesteal and attack speed; if he picks up the axe he loops Undertow almost immediately and the slow chain never drops. These two levels belong to him: last-hit safely, track where the axe lands, and hold your E charges for escape, not aggression. At level 3 your full kit is online but his is more dangerous than yours — his E deals true damage every few seconds independent of your resistances, while your Q slow requires him to stand still long enough to be hooked. Only trade when Undertow is down and you are near full HP.
