How to win lane as Riven against Gragas · 50.19% win rate over 1,317 Emerald+ games · Updated 2026-07-27
| Stage | Favoured | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Even / skill | Neither kit is decided at Level 1 — Gragas has no E yet and you have no W, so both sides poke with basics and feel out the wave. |
| Level 2 | Gragas | Gragas gets Body Slam (E) and W at Level 2: he E's into you, pops W to absorb your burst, and backs out — you cannot match that trade pattern yet. |
| Level 3 | Even / skill | At Level 3 your full combo can beat his W bubble if you W-stun him before he reacts, giving you the only genuine pre-6 all-in window. |
| Levels 4-5 | Gragas | Levels 4-5 his Barrel Roll poke chips you down while his sustain and bulk keep him healthier — only trade when his E is visibly on cooldown. |
| Level 6 | Gragas | At Level 6 Gragas's Explosive Cask can knock you out of your Q chain mid-combo, wasting Wind Slash and turning your all-in into free damage for him. |
| First item | Gragas | First item Gragas completes Heartsteel or Jak'Sho and his W damage reduction blunts your Eclipse spike — fights cost you more than they cost him. |
| Two+ items | Even / skill | At 2+ items the duel is genuinely even execution-dependent — neither side reliably closes it, and the map matters more than the 1v1. |
At Level 1 neither of you has a decisive edge — Gragas's Barrel Roll (Q) poke costs him mana and he needs time to position it, while you have no W stun yet and your Q autos alone won't crack his early bulk. Trade carefully with the tip of Q and identify whether he is angling for a level-2 all-in with Body Slam (E) or just poking from range. At Level 2 he gets Body Slam and immediately gains the better trade: he E's into you, activates W to eat your burst, and backs out with his tank itemisation soaking the rest. Do not full-commit at Level 2 — poke with Q autos, use E shield reactively to punish his Q landing on you, and wait for Level 3. At Level 3 your kit is complete and this is the one pre-6 window where your combo can outpace his W bubble if you act before he presses it: E in, W stun immediately on landing (so he cannot activate W in reaction), then Q chain him — if his W is already on cooldown from a prior trade you can punish him cleanly.
