How to win lane as Gnar against Akali · 43.45% win rate (924 Emerald+ games, lolalytics, sampled July 2026) · Matchup data reviewed on patch 26.15
Build MR — boomerang-poke off shroud, Mega-CC.
Track: Akali's W — Twilight Shroud (20–16s cooldown). Untargetable inside. Poke when down.
Read from Gnar's seat: which stage windows this plan plays for against Akali.
| Stage | Favoured | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Gnar | Akali has no Shroud charge and short, energy-gated Q poke at level 1, so Mini Gnar's ranged autos and a single Boomerang Throw win the first trade clean with nothing given back. |
| Level 2 | Even / skill | At level 2 my Hyper third-hit proc plus Boomerang is a big trade, but she can Q-poke and disengage, and whether my Rage lines up is a coin-flip — call it even. |
| Level 3 | Even / skill | From 3 she gets Twilight Shroud to dodge my Boomerang and go untargetable, cancelling my Mini range edge — it comes down to baiting the Shroud, so it's skill-dependent. |
| Levels 4-5 | Akali | These levels are Rage RNG: stuck in fragile Mini with Rage down, her E shuriken-dash and Shroud burst delete me before Mega and Wallop are available. |
| Level 6 | Gnar | At 6 she gets R — two charges of a dash-and-execute — while I get no new spell, so if Mega isn't up she dives my squishy Mini body and executes for the kill. |
| First item | Akali | Her first-item spike (Rocketbelt or Shadowflame) lets her shuriken-and-Shroud combo blow up my Mini window on cooldown, and my form-swap burst can't keep pace with item burst. |
| Two+ items | Akali | Full-AP Akali goes untargetable and invisible with Shroud — my Wallop and GNAR! wall-combo whiff through the smoke and her burst ignores Mega's bulk, so as a scaler she owns 2+ items. |
Akali is paper at level 1 — no Shroud charge, short energy-gated Q poke — so Mini Gnar bullies. My ranged autos and a Boomerang Throw out-range her, the boomerang slows her, and catching it on the return partially refunds the cooldown for a quick second poke. At level 2, landing Hyper's third consecutive hit on her procs my move-speed burst to chase down a clean free trade, but watch the Rage bar so I'm not stranded in a swap mid-trade. From 3 on she gets Twilight Shroud to dodge my Boomerang and go untargetable, so don't dump a full combo into a Shroud — bait it, then re-engage once it drops.
