Maokai pre-6 is just sapling chip and the threat of his W (Twisted Advance) root, so respect the bush — if he lands the W dash he gets a free Q (Bramble Smash) knockback and a sapling combo on you. Last-hit safely with the center column of your Q (Winds of War) where his saplings can't trade with you for free, and don't channel W (Shield of Durand) into nothing since his damage is sustained chip, not the burst your channel is built to sponge. Once you have Q plus E by level 3 you out-range his poke and can punish any step-up with W-taunt into E (Justice Punch) knockup.
