How to win lane as Sona against Alistar · 50.87% win rate (2,373 Emerald+ games, lolalytics, sampled July 2026) · Matchup data reviewed on patch 26.15
His engage hunts exactly you — chord from maximum range and pay the squishiest tax in the role carefully.
Track: Alistar's W — Headbutt (14–10s cooldown). The headbutt-pulverize combo starts every play — respect flash range while it is up.
Read from Sona's seat: which stage windows this plan plays for against Alistar.
This is Sona's own plan; across 2,373 pooled games the lane is leaning Sona.
| Stage | Favoured | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Even / skill | Level 1 favours Alistar: a Pulverize knockup punishes your poke; Q has no CC. |
| Level 2 | Even / skill | Level 2 tips Alistar: W-Q lands a knockup-stun — Power Chord can't punish it. |
| Level 3 | Even / skill | Level 3 stays Alistar's: Headbutt refreshes in 12s at rank 3, threatening the combo most waves. |
| Levels 4-5 | Even / skill | Levels 4-5 stay Alistar's: combo threatens step-ups; Aria shields damage, not the stun. |
| Level 6 | Alistar | Level 6 favours Alistar because Unbreakable Will lets him dive through your combo unkillable. |
| First item | Alistar | First item still favours Alistar as engage item plus flash out-ranges your peel. |
| Two+ items | Sona | 2+ items favour Sona as your auras, slows and teamfight ult outscale a single-target tank. |
Levels 1-3 are a skill matchup: you out-poke with Hymn of Valor and Power Chord, but one clean Headbutt-Pulverize can flip a trade, so respect his all-in range and shield-song when he steps up. Mana decides how long you can hold the lane, so cycle the damage aura only when your carry is actually going to auto with it. Keep the shield-aura for the moment he flips rather than the poke, and let your ADC take the wave while you stay behind the minion line.
