Malzahar's Voidlings auto-push the wave and his passive shields him from your poke, so trying to trade Q into him early just feeds his shield back into his face. Respect his E (Malefic Visions) range completely — it does real damage over time and reveals you, setting up ganks. Levels 1-2 are close to unplayable proactively; just last-hit under turret and hold Timewinder for peeling Voidlings off the wave. Don't group up in melee range for AA trades — his passive punishes exactly that.
