At Level 1 you hold the poke advantage — Q-auto to chip his HP and establish wave priority. Do not over-extend without W, though: Maokai’s passive lets him heal a chunk off every spell he casts, so pure Q-auto pressure is offset faster than it looks. The real threat is his W Twisted Advance. That is a guaranteed root — he dashes directly onto you and there is no travel time to dodge once he commits. At Level 2 the lane flips. He has W now; you have W too, but his root is longer-ranged and punishes any forward step you take without an E-dash answer ready. At Level 3 he adds Q knockback and can sap-zone your CS spots. Play at max Q range, keep E available to sidestep his W dash, and accept you are not going to blow him up in this window.
