Gnar's opener is the problem — his boomerang (Q) and hop-empowered autos chip you while you have only one ability and no way to close the gap, so don't walk into his range trying to throw a single Q. Last-hit with Q's max-HP smash and accept a little poke; your armor and sustain outlast his chip. The turn comes at level 3: once you have Q and E, any time he hops or boomerangs toward terrain you can E him into the wall for the stun and a real trade. Bait that hop near a wall and punish it.
