How to win lane as Gragas against Tahm Kench · 49.14% win rate over 232 Emerald+ games · Updated 2026-07-27
| Stage | Favoured | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Even / skill | You both have a one-ability level 1 and your Q poke does nothing his grey-health passive won't regenerate, so just last-hit and don't overstep into his Q-tongue range. |
| Level 2 | Even / skill | Q poke plus a W auto is a sustain trade, but his grey health heals it back out of vision, so it's even, not favoured: you can't bank poke into a lead. |
| Level 3 | Even / skill | Your combo isn't fully online and your cooldowns are long, but he can't kill you either; he just eats poke and Q-stuns when you overstep, so it stays a stalemate. |
| Levels 4-5 | Even / skill | W max plus Happy Hour lets you out-sustain a normal trade, yet his drain-tank grey health matches your healing, so it's genuinely even through this window. |
| Level 6 | Gragas | Explosive Cask is a real all-in: place it on the far side to shove him into a wall or your tower, then E-stun so his W dive and grey health can't bail him out. |
| First item | Gragas | Riftmaker makes your W-empowered max-HP auto out-damage his sustain, your peak window to force the kill before his grey health regenerates. |
| Two+ items | Even / skill | Full-build Tahm out-sustains your magic DPS and his W percent-HP damage ignores your HP pool, so you fall to peel duty and the duel goes back to even-or-worse. |
Tahm Kench is a wall, not a punching bag. Your Q (Barrel Roll) magic poke and W-empowered autos do chunk him, but his grey-health passive regenerates most of that the moment he breaks vision, so you never actually convert pokes into a lead. Do not throw E-Body Slam in to open a trade: eating that whiffed stun is exactly what his Q-tongue punishes, and with your only hard CC down he can slow-stun you and walk you down. Last-hit with Barrel Roll, drink with W to clear and trigger Happy Hour to stay topped, and accept this is a stalemate by design. Don't feed him a free Q on your dash.
