Malzahar is a lane bully through DoT and voidling zoning, not through burst trades, so at level 1-2 you can walk up and punish him in melee range before his Void Swarm covers the gap. His passive shield only mitigates one instance of damage, and once it's gone your auto-Q combo deals more damage per second than his ability rotation. He has to play passively and farm from range, which cedes you lane priority early.
