How to win the jungle race as Hecarim against Rengar · Matchup data reviewed on patch 26.15
Read from Hecarim's seat: the race windows this plan plays for against Rengar.
| Stage | Read | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 Clear | Respect Rengar | A brush-side Savagery leap is the hardest level-1 opener in the jungle, and Hecarim has no clean answer to it at the first buff — a brush-leap empowered Savagery removes half your HP before you can react. Hug the centre of corridors away from brush — his entire kit needs a bush to function, and give up your opening camps rather than the kill. |
| Level 2 Skirmish | Respect Rengar | The window on the second camp belongs to Rengar: Battle Roar's heal plus ferocity stacking wins extended buff fights. Your own line is real — Spirit of Dread sustain plus Q stacks wins the attrition fight — but it arrives second here. Hug the centre of corridors away from brush — his entire kit needs a bush to function, then refuse the level-2 skirmish. |
| Level 3 Route | Respect Rengar | At level 3 this window belongs to Rengar: a 4-ferocity empowered Q already one-shots squishier junglers near any bush, and a brush-leap empowered Savagery removes half your HP before you can react. Hug the centre of corridors away from brush — his entire kit needs a bush to function. Give up the level-3 river fight and bank tempo on the opposite side of the map. |
| Levels 4-5 Macro | Respect Rengar — Path Opposite | Do not trade windows with Rengar here: he hunts brushes through 4-5, and any lane with an unswept bush is a full-ferocity kill. Path opposite, keep your entrances warded, and answer the map, not the champion. |
| Level 6 Breakpoint | Even Ult Window | Level six changes both of you at once: the Onslaught fear charge opens fights with their carry running the wrong way, while Thrill of the Hunt opens every fight with an unanswerable stealth leap. Hug control wards when his R pings the map — the reveal radius is your only warning, and let the objective timer say when to commit. |
| First Item Spike | Spear of Shojin Spike | Completing your core item triggers a massive damage, movement speed, and ability haste multiplier that completely overpowers traditional brawlers. Rengar's first item is the point where an empowered Savagery stops chunking and starts one-shotting squishier targets. |
| 2+ Items Scaling | Even Scaling — Prep Decides | Neither of you out-scales the other. He leaps from stealth and removes a squishy before the health bar finishes updating, so the late game is decided by who starts the fight, not who wins the stat sheet. |
Start your clear at the Raptor or Wolf camp utilizing your Rampage (Q) to maximize early AoE clear speed without a leash. Rengar clears well off Battle Roar healing and Savagery resets, and he arrives at three with ferocity ready to spend.

Rengar pressures 4 of the 7 windows in this race — survive the early game and scale into your windows.
Not exactly — Rengar pressures 4 of the 7 windows, so Hecarim is playing catch-up and has to lean on the map.
